Standings after Australia: Max Verstappen still leading, Mercedes suffers heavy setback
Despite his retirement, Max Verstappen remains the leader of the world championship. In the constructors' standings, the double retirement of Mercedes shakes things up and plunges them into the middle of the table.
His lead was already comfortable enough. With two victories in two races, Max Verstappen was already at the top of the standings, with a considerable margin. So much so that despite his retirement in Australia, the Red Bull driver remains at the top of the 2024 F1 standings. However, he sees Charles Leclerc coming very close to him. Four points separate the two men.
With his victory, Carlos Sainz jumps up in the standings and is now chasing Sergio Perez for the last spot on the podium. The Spaniard has 40 points compared to 46 for the Mexican.
The two Mercedes drivers appear much further back. With their retirement, the British drivers are only in eighth and ninth place. This also has consequences for the constructors’ standings as the German team falls to fifth place, just one point behind Aston Martin.
Alpine, Williams, and Sauber Stake remain the three teams that have not yet scored any points.
