The crash of Alex Albon prevents Logan Sargeant from participating in the Australian Grand Prix
The Thai pilot's accident in Free Practice 1 has big consequences: his chassis damaged, he will use Logan Sargeant's for the rest of the weekend. The latter is therefore out, as Williams does not have a third chassis in Melbourne.
The crash of the Williams will have a big impact on the team’s weekend.
Alex Albon lost control of his car in the series of fast corners on the edge of Albert Park Lake during the first practice session. After the car spun off in a high-speed corner, the Williams ended its race along the wall, scattering multiple debris on the track. This incident prompted a red flag, interrupting the session for 10 minutes. Fortunately, Alex Albon emerged unharmed.
Despite the efforts of the mechanics, Alex Albon was unable to start the second free practice session, which began 2 hours and 30 minutes after the end of the first session. Rumors were spreading, Williams was in a tricky situation. Indeed, the team did not bring a third chassis to Australia, and the damage to Albon’s was too severe, making a repair impossible.
Williams therefore chose to make Logan Sargeant’s chassis available so that his teammate could continue his weekend.
Logan Sargeant reacted to this decision: “This is the hardest moment I can remember in my career, it’s really not easy. However, I am fully here for the team and I will continue to contribute in every way I can this weekend to maximize what we can do.”
The pressure is now on Alex Albon’s shoulders, who will have to achieve a result on his own this weekend:
« I must be completely honest and say that no driver would want to give up their seat. I never wanted something like this to happen. Logan has always been an example of professionalism and a team player, and it will not be easy for him to accept. But at this point, I cannot worry about the situation and my only job now is to maximize our potential this weekend and work with the whole team to ensure that we do the best job possible. »
Response tonight starting from 2:30 AM to follow Free Practice 3.
