The rankings after Las Vegas: Ferrari very close to Mercedes, Perez vice-world champion

Ferrari is now just 4 points behind Mercedes after Las Vegas. The suspense for second place in the constructor championship is high before the last Grand Prix of the season. Meanwhile, Sergio Perez is officially the runner-up to Max Verstappen in the driver championship.

A great battle for the 2nd place in the constructor’s championship awaits

George Russell’s 5-second penalty for colliding with Verstappen is costing Mercedes dearly. Despite crossing the finish line in 4th position, he only ends up 8th due to the penalty. He loses 8 points in this incident: out of the potential 12 points for 4th place, he only manages to collect 4 points in the end. Lewis Hamilton finishes one place ahead of his teammate.

On the other side, at Ferrari, Charles Leclerc achieves an outstanding race by securing the second step on the podium. Carlos Sainz has been very solid, finishing in 6th position despite starting from 17th.

The consequence in the constructors’ ranking is immediate, Ferrari was 20 points behind Mercedes before Las Vegas, and now the red team is only 4 points away from their German rival! The battle for second place in the constructors’ championship will therefore be decided at the last race of the season, next weekend in Abu Dhabi.

For the fourth place in the constructor’s championship, McLaren still holds the position but has lost ground to Aston Martin after Lance Stroll’s impressive performance (5th). The Woking team now has only an 11-point lead.

At the bottom of the constructor’s standings, there are no notable changes. Williams is still in 7th place, ahead of AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo, and Haas, alternating in red.

Perez runner-up, Gasly loses big

We could hope for a fight with Lewis Hamilton, but it ultimately didn’t happen. The British driver is now 41 points behind Sergio Pérez. With only one race left in the championship, the gap is too big and the Mexican is indeed the vice-world champion.

Interwoven destinies at Alpine. Starting in 4th position, Pierre Gasly could hope to score big points. However, it wasn’t meant to be. He finishes 11th in a race where he constantly dropped in the rankings. Esteban Ocon, on the other hand, started far down the grid (16th), but made a consistent comeback after an excellent start. He finishes 4th in the race and narrows the gap to his teammate to 4 points before Abu Dhabi.

Despite his excellent race, Charles Leclerc is still 7th in the driver’s standings. He is closing in on his teammate’s 4th position, but the 12-point difference will be difficult to make up in just one Grand Prix.
