Pietro Fittipaldi leaves F1 and will drive in Indycar
The Brazilian driver is going to leave the Haas stable and his role as third driver to find a place as a regular in the North American single-seater championship.
Pietro Fittipaldi will make his return to Indycar in 2024 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing as a full-time driver. He will rediscover a championship in which he made some appearances in 2018 and then in 2021, forced to take a break of several months due to an accident.
Fittipaldi was participating in the WEC World Series (World Endurance Championship) when he suffered an accident during qualifying for the Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours in May 2018. This accident caused him fractures in his legs, which kept him away from the tracks for several months for his rehabilitation.
For 2024, the Brazilian driver will driver the single-seater No. 30 alongside Graham Rahal, son of the team owner, and Christian Lundgaard.
The Formula 1 adventure therefore ends for the grandson of the double world champion Brazilian, Emerson Fittipaldi, after 5 years as the third driver at Haas and only 2 Grand Prix raced, during the replacement of Romain Grosjean after his serious accident in 2020 on the Sakhir circuit.
Finally, his illustrious Grandfather also raced across the Atlantic with a little more success, including 2 world championship titles in Formula 1 (1972 with Lotus and 1974 with McLaren), 2 victories in the 500 Miles of Indianapolis (1989 and 1993) and 1 title in CART (ancestor of Indycar) in 1989.
Haas has not officially communicated about the departure of the Brazilian reserve driver but the schedules of Indycar and F1 overlapping, it is difficult to imagine a continuation of his role as a reserve.
