Max Verstappen should have been penalized in Singapore

This is what fueled the debates during the press conference. During the Singapore Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was at the center of controversies for blocking the pit lane in Q1. But also for hindering Yuki Tsunoda in Q2, which prevented the Japanese driver from setting a time.

Summoned by the FIA commissioners, the double world champion was only reprimanded and did not receive a grid penalty. A situation that left some observers perplexed.

The FIA explains its decisions

A short week after these incidents, some drivers expressed doubts about the impartiality of the FIA regarding sanctions. Lando Norris, without directly citing any examples, expressed his wish for the stewards to be tougher on drivers who hinder their fellow competitors during qualifying.

The situation was discussed during the meeting between the teams and the FIA, this Friday evening in Suzuka. Matteo Perini, who was one of the commissioners present in Singapore and also present at the meeting, admits that Max Verstappen should have received a three-place grid penalty for obstructing Yuki Tsunoda.

Regarding the incident on the pit lane, the commissioner assured that the right decision had been made. However, Matteo Perini clarified that he had advised the FIA to regulate this situation in the future.
