Sergio Perez sanctioned after the finish in Singapore
The Mexican driver has received a five-second penalty for causing a collision with Alexander Albon towards the end of the Grand Prix. He is also being given a penalty point on his Super License.
On social media, the comments were harsh. Some compared him to a kamikaze. So, in the battle with Alexander Albon, Sergio Perez wanted to gain a position at the expense of the Thai driver. But, at turn 13, the Mexican was too daring.
He attempted an overtaking maneuver on the inside, even though the space between the wall and the Williams was way too narrow. The Red Bull driver ended up colliding with Alex Albon, who had to go straight and narrowly avoided crashing into the wall. As a result of the maneuver, the Williams driver lost several positions.
An optimistic maneuver
Summoned after the race, the two men explained themselves before the stewards, who deemed Sergio Perez to be at fault. The stewards considered it to be a late and “optimistic” maneuver by the driver of car 11, which could be defined as a “divebomb” and that the driver of car 23 wouldn’t have been able to do anything to avoid the collision. Therefore, it was determined that the driver of car 11 was primarily responsible, explain the stewards in document 50 of the Singapore Grand Prix.
He was then penalized with a five-second penalty. A sanction that doesn’t change his final position. Sergio Perez remains in eighth place. However, he has received one penalty point on his Super License. This brings his total to three points out of twelve within a one-year period. As a reminder, a driver accumulating 12 points is suspended for one Grand Prix.
