Carlos Sainz elected driver of the day in Singapore
The Spanish driver achieved his first victory of the season after starting from pole position. While Charles Leclerc allowed him to maintain his position at the start of the race, it was his racing intelligence that did the rest.
The end of the Grand Prix must have been suffocating in the cockpit of the Ferrari number 55. In addition to the heat and humidity, the pressure added to these two other elements. Carlos Sainz had to battle for 62 laps, first against the entire field, but protected by Charles Leclerc.
Once the Monegasque driver was erased due to the first safety car, it was George Russell who put pressure on the Scuderia driver. But without managing to overtake him. Carlos Sainz was able to enforce a slow pace, but not enough to be overtaken.
After Esteban Ocon’s retirement, the Mercedes team switched to medium tires. The two Silver Arrows then came back like bullets towards the Spanish driver and second-placed Lando Norris. Thanks to his racing intelligence, the Spanish driver offered DRS (Drag Reduction System) to the British driver, which prevented the Mercedes cars from overtaking both the McLaren and the Ferrari.
He is the first driver to beat Red Bull this season. Carlos Sainz secures his second career win, after the British Grand Prix last year.
