Hamilton and Sargeant receive a two-point penalty on their Superlicence
The two men were judged responsible for causing a collision during this Italian Grand Prix. Therefore, they received a five-second penalty on their race time and two penalty points on their Super License.
The FIA didn’t waste time in delivering its final verdict. During the Grand Prix, on four occasions, the stewards conducted investigations into race incidents. The first one involved George Russell for cutting the first chicane. And the last one, for the same reason, this time involving Oscar Piastri.
Between these two incidents, two other investigations were conducted following clashes on the track. First, there was an incident between Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri. While battling for position, the two men were side by side approaching the second chicane, but the Briton squeezed the McLaren. Contact was inevitable. They had to take the escape route, and the Australian had to go through the pit lane to change his damaged wing.
Contacts at the second chicane
Considered responsible, Lewis Hamilton received a five-second penalty, which was added to his race time. Despite this, he did not lose his sixth place at the end of the Grand Prix. However, the FIA has penalized the seven-time world champion with two penalty points on his Superlicence. He now has a total of four points within a twelve-month period.
The other driver to receive the same penalty is Logan Sargeant. The American was once again close to scoring his first points but dropped down in the standings. On top of that, the five-second penalty received after a contact with Valtteri Bottas, in the same corner as the two other protagonists, did not help.
He finishes 12th in this Italian Grand Prix and receives his first two penalty points on his Superlicense. As a reminder, if a driver accumulates a total of twelve points in one year, they are excluded from one race.
