Verstappen: “I never would have believed it possible.”
By taking first place in Monza, the Dutch driver secures his tenth consecutive Grand Prix victory. In order to do so, he had to get rid of the pressure from the Ferraris.
10/10 for Max Verstappen. By winning the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, the Dutch champion also secured a new record this season, that of the highest number of consecutive victories, ten in a row, one more than Vettel.
At the end of the Grand Prix, before stepping onto the podium, Red Bull’s driver, with a slight smile on his lips, pretended to be modest. « “I would have never believed this was possible,” he reassured.
Savoring his forty-seventh victory in F1, the second at Monza, Verstappen reflected on his race. Starting in second place after the qualifications, he had to wait until the fifteenth lap to overtake Carlos Sainz. « He locked his wheels, and I was able to pass and continue my race. »
« We had a good rhythm, good tire management, but the Ferraris were able to maintain a high speed », acknowledged Verstappen, who admitted having to show « patience, as it was a long race and tire management was crucial. »
However, once Verstappen successfully overtook Sainz, he was never troubled by his competitors. Even when he changed tires on the twenty-first lap, switching from hard to medium compounds, he effortlessly reclaimed his first position.
With his record of consecutive victories, Max Verstappen is continuing a season that sees him breaking record after record. At the end of the Monaco Grand Prix, he had surpassed Sebastien Vettel (once again) in terms of the number of wins for the Red Bull team.
And during the Canadian Grand Prix, he had surpassed Ayrton Senna’s number of victories. Each time, Verstappen had accepted his success with a joy tinged with surprise. Until the next record?
