“I didn’t have enough time to take my hands off the steering wheel,” Ricciardo explains his accident
The Australian driver hit the wall at turn 4 during the second free practice session. The impact broke his finger, so he will be unable to participate in the Dutch Grand Prix.
The return from vacation hurts Daniel Ricciardo. After an hour and fifteen minutes of driving on Friday, August 25th, the AlphaTauri driver was caught in Oscar Piastri’s accident, just a few seconds ahead of him. At turn 4, the McLaren driver hit the wall after making a mistake. The location of the car was hidden by the banking of this corner.
Daniel Ricciardo, not having seen him, had to also steer towards the barriers. But the impact broke his finger. « I remember arriving at turn 3. I was already entering the corner, then I saw Piastri, so it was either him or the wall. When I hit the wall, I didn’t have enough time to remove my hands from the steering wheel, so it came back and hit my hand. It’s really unfortunate and frustrating, but I’ll try to recover as quickly as possible », explains the Australian.
For now, the duration of Daniel Ricciardo’s unavailability has not been communicated. For this Grand Prix of the Netherlands, Liam Lawson will be replacing him. « Naturally, I would like to come back soon, but I also want to make sure to do things correctly, so that I can come back strong and competitive. I wish the team the best, and I am sorry for this change of plans. It’s an opportunity for Liam to seize, and I wish him and the team a great weekend. »
