Fernando Alonso regrets not having won a championship with Ferrari
The Spaniard recently revealed that if he could go back in time, he would go for a third world championship with the Scuderia. He is also tempted by the experience of the Dakar rally and wants to win it.
His years in red did not have the expected success. Arriving at Ferrari in 2010, the Spaniard was able to have a competitive car from his first year. In fact, he was in a position to win the championship that year. However, a young German in a Red Bull shattered his hopes.
Two years later, this same German, going by the name of Sebastian Vettel, snatches another world championship from him just a few laps before the end of the season. In an interview with the High Performance podcast, Fernando Alonso revealed that not winning a title with the Scuderia is one of his biggest regrets.
Just a few rounds away from winning a title
« Winning a championship with Ferrari, that would probably be the first thing I would choose if I could go back in time. In 2010 and 2012, we were just a few laps away from winning the championship, he indicates. « If I had achieved it, it could have changed the outcome of many things and the story behind it. I am very disappointed to have missed it. »
However, the current Aston Martin driver explains that it is truly difficult to regret this since an event like a world championship title does not depend solely on the driver. « It depends on many other people but also on the teams, the performance of the car, and other things. »
Not made enough of his career
The double world champion then explains that his biggest regret in his career is not having enjoyed it enough. « I am at the end of my career and I will have a new life once I stop racing. When I look back, I have had beautiful experiences, great friendships. But I would have appreciated these moments more. If I had the opportunity to relive my life, I wouldn’t change anything about my choices. Just, I would enjoy these moments more. »
The Spanish supports his statement with two examples. He explains that he remembers with difficulty the afternoons when he won his two titles, in 2005 and 2006, with Renault. « That’s sad. »
The third title is not a priority
In Formula 1, many world champions have raced for a long time to win three titles. This puts them in a very select circle, including Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, and Juan Manuel Fangio.
Fernando Alonso is close with his two crowns. However, the race for this third championship is not a priority for him. « I want to take advantage with Aston Martin so that the team becomes a competitor in the future. There is a 99% chance that I will try the Dakar experience. Winning the Dakar is my highest priority. »
