Otmar Szafnauer does not give up on F1
Recently fired by Alpine, Otmar Szafnauer hopes that he will find a position, in a year, when the contractual period of forced inactivity will be over.
The news has stirred up the whole Spa paddock. This Friday, July 28th, Alpine announced that they are parting ways with their team principal. One and a half years after his arrival, Otmar Szafnauer is being sidelined to be replaced by Bruno Famin.
The engineer will have to observe a mandatory one-year period of inactivity, as required by the Formula 1 regulation. But once this period is over, the Romanian-American wishes to find a position within a racing team.
A victory and a podium with Racing Point/Aston Martin
« I think I still have good skills to build a team that can be successful. I know how to do it, I just need to be given the freedom and time to do so. If someone needs these skills, then I will stay around. »
In the past, Otmar Szafnauer was at the head of the Racing Point team. He joined the team in 2018 before experiencing the taste of victory thanks to Sergio Perez at the Sakhir Grand Prix in 2020. One year later, the team was renamed Aston Martin. Here, in his final year, he sees Sebastian Vettel on the podium in Baku.
