Guanyu Zhou has been penalized for causing the retirement of the Alpine
The Chinese driver was deemed responsible for the incident in the first corner, in Hungary. He receives a five-second penalty.
He had started his weekend perfectly. Guanyu Zhou was launching from an unexpected fifth place in Hungary, ahead of the Ferraris. But, his start was chaotic as he failed to launch correctly. This brought him to the back of the pack.
Stuck in traffic, the Chinese driver mishandled his braking at the first turn. He went and hit the rear of Daniel Ricciardo’s car. The Australian driver was then launched into Esteban Ocon’s Alpine, who in turn touched Pierre Gasly. This accident caused the retirement of both French drivers.
Following this, the FIA decided to open an investigation, which led to a five-second penalty. The Alfa Romeo driver will have to serve it during their next pit stop.
