Lewis Hamilton does not rule out teaming up with Fernando Alonso

Here’s something surprising. Lewis Hamilton would be willing to team up with Fernando Alonso. The two men have already shared the McLaren garage during the British driver’s early days in Formula 1, back in 2007. Their relationship had been tense. The Spaniard, with his strong personality and two world championship titles under his belt, notably prevented his young teammate from making a final qualifying attempt in Hungary by blocking him in the pit lane.

Many years later, as their paths did not take the same directions, the two men did not maintain any friendship. Last year, in Belgium, they clashed. This had caused the anger of the driver on the radio, saying about Hamilton « that he only knew how to win when starting from the first place ».

During their season in 2007, McLaren played on their rivalry, notably with a viral advertisement showing the two men wanting to leave their hotel room as quickly as possible to arrive downstairs first. On the track, while in Hungary, Alonso complicated the management task of the directors, the tension had been mounting throughout the season. Alonso arrived at McLaren as the boss, with two world championship titles acquired with Renault in 2005 and 2006. Hamilton, on the other hand, a highly anticipated young prodigy, had not yet proven himself. However, the British driver was equal to the Spanish driver after only a few races, forcing Alonso to deploy all his talent to compete for the title. In the end, that year it was Kimi Räikkönen who won his one and only Formula 1 world championship title, with Ferrari, one point ahead of the McLaren duo of Hamilton and Alonso, who finished with equal points at the end of the season.

Note that McLaren had been excluded from the 2007 season by the FIA following the incident known as the “spygate”, which also resulted in a fine of 100 million euros.

The eighth title always in mind

Despite these incidents, the Briton could once again share a garage with Fernando Alonso. « If the stars align, yes, I would share a team with Fernando Alonso again, but I don’t think that will happen », he indicated to DAZN.

In the same interview, the Mercedes driver admits that his quest for an eighth world title is still ongoing. « I want to win my eighth title. I have my next world championship in sight, I am completely focused on that and I don’t want any distractions. »

This one could make a comeback next year. Indeed, with the delay he has on Max Verstappen, the championship leader, and the inconsistent performances of the W14, it seems difficult to achieve it this year…
