Sergio Pérez: “I benefit from the full support of the team”

Another weekend with mixed results for Sergio Pérez. Eliminated in Q1 on Saturday, he nevertheless managed to finish the race in 6th position, greatly helped by the safety car. There is still frustration, however, considering the performance of his teammate and double reigning world champion, who is soaring in the championship.

Sergio Pérez: “I benefit from the full support of the team”

For the umpteenth time, the qualifying session did not go well for Sergio Pérez. He was greatly penalized due to his poor position on the grid, and the Mexican driver could only manage a 6th place finish in the Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver is still looking for a trouble-free weekend that could fully revive his performance. However, Pérez does not feel in danger and asserts that he will return to the highest level. In fact, Helmut Marko affirms that it was not his fault this time.

In Silverstone, a complicated race

Of course, starting from the back of the pack, nothing is easy. It’s always better to start at the front, even behind the wheel of a Red Bull. Pérez blames two things for this difficult race. First, a tense situation with Esteban Ocon that cost him several positions, and then poor timing with the safety car. Another tough Sunday for the Mexican, who still managed to salvage a few points.

« I had a good start, but then I was pushed off the track by Esteban Ocon and lost positions at the beginning, which took me more time to make my way through the pack. Then we stopped three or four laps before the safety car came out, which is a bit unfortunate », said the Mexican after the race.

Pérez is well aware of what’s been going wrong for a few races now and intends to fix it. « I know where the issue lies, and it’s on Saturday. There are a few points we need to address, but the positive aspect is that the pace is there on Sunday, at the end of the day when points are awarded, » he explained.

Some necessary work but support for the Mexican

Sergio Pérez must absolutely work on his qualifying performance, it’s his only chance to have a clean weekend from Friday to Sunday. He assures us that he is working on it: « We have some ideas on the areas to focus on and I am confident that we will be able to do it,» he said.

« When we don’t feel completely comfortable with the car, we tend to see these margins. This has happened to any other driver, but what matters is how you overcome these situations,» the Mexican driver defends himself.

Faced with media pressure for several weeks, and even the pressure from Red Bull, Sergio Pérez insists that he is fully supported by his team and its leaders during this difficult period. « I have the full support of the team, Helmut, Christian, and all my engineers. Everyone in the team knows what I am capable of, that’s how it is sometimes,» Pérez explained.

Helmut Marko confirmed it during an interview with Canal+: « He needs to improve his qualifying performances, but this time I want to defend him because we believed that the other cars behind him wouldn’t make it to Q2 and, as a result, his tires cooled down and he couldn’t set a good time to advance to Q2.»

Now 99 points behind Max Verstappen in the championship, Sergio Pérez does not want to lose hope and is determined to regain his best level as soon as possible. « I am still second in the championship and I firmly believe that I can turn the tide and regain the level that is mine. The most important thing is that I am mentally strong, I am in a very strong position, and I have no doubt that I will overcome this,» he concluded.
