Official: The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix cancelled
Without surprise, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola is officially cancelled due to the floods and risks for the public.
It has been 2 days since the bad news about the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola started to pour in, and it is now official, it has been cancelled due to the severe weather conditions that have affected the city of Imola.
This decision comes after the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, called for the race to be postponed. He also insists that authorities should focus on the flood victims as the death toll continues to rise.
The Formula 1 community would like to extend its thoughts to the individuals and communities affected by the recent events in the Emilia-Romagna region. We would also like to pay tribute to the work of the emergency services who are doing everything they can to assist those in need. Following discussions between Formula 1, the President of the FIA, the competent authorities, including the relevant ministers, the President of the Automobile Club of Italy, the President of the Emilia-Romagna region, the President of the European Union, the Mayor of the city, and the promoter, the decision has been made not to proceed with the Imola Grand Prix.
The decision has been made because it is not possible to organize the event safely for our fans, teams, and staff, and it is the right and responsible thing to do considering the situation in which the cities of the region find themselves. It would not be fair to put additional pressure on local authorities and emergency services in these difficult times, says Formula 1 in a press release.
The President of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, also spoke about the subject: “It is such a tragedy to see what has happened in Imola and the Emilia-Romagna, the city and region where I grew up. My thoughts and prayers go out to the flood victims, the affected families, and communities. I want to express my gratitude and admiration for the emergency services who are tirelessly working to assist those in need and improve the situation. They are heroes and all of Italy is proud of them. The decision that has been made is the right one for everyone. We must ensure safety and not create an additional burden for the authorities as they deal with this terrible event.”
