Alonso wants to keep Ferrari and Mercedes behind him
Fernando Alonso believes that the pace displayed by Aston Martin in Miami gives him hope that they will be able to catch up to Red Bull on certain circuits in 2023.
After another podium, Fernando Alonso stated that he hoped Aston Martin could catch up with Red Bull on certain circuits this year, after finishing closer to the team to beat in the last Grand Prix.
The newly arrived driver at Aston Martin finished 26 seconds behind 2nd place Sergio Perez, which is 12 seconds less than during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Even if the gap seems to have narrowed and it appears that Red Bull had more pace by saving fuel towards the end, Alonso believes it will be difficult, but he is counting on the forthcoming improvements to get closer.
« I think this year will be difficult. The gap is quite significant, even though I believe today we had our best race pace since the beginning of the season,” he declared to the media. « We finished closest to the leaders, without a safety car, without anything in the race, and we are still very fast. The season is still long. ».
I hope that on certain tracks, we will be a little closer to them. And I hope that some of the improvements we will bring later in the season might put us in a different or more competitive position.
Alonso: « The main objective is to keep Mercedes and Ferrari behind »
Aston Martin did a good job in keeping Mercedes and Ferrari behind, with the Azerbaijan race being the only weekend where Alonso didn’t make it to the podium. This phenomenon can be explained as the Aston Martin team faced DRS issues.
The team currently has 102 points in the Constructors’ Championship, which is twice as much as last year. Alonso talks about the team’s main objective, while acknowledging that Red Bull has done a better job than everyone else.
“I think that our main goal, to be honest, is to look behind us and try to keep Mercedes and Ferrari under control in the Constructors’ Championship,” he said.
But I think we have to accept that Red Bull does a better job than everyone else and that we need to continue our efforts in order to hope to catch up with them.
