Hamilton/Magnussen incident: no penalty given by the FIA

One less wing for Lewis Hamilton. That’s all the incident with Kevin Magnussen during qualifying will cost him. In this session, the Haas driver was slowing down, preparing for a flying lap at turn 17. Behind him, the Briton was approaching a bit faster.

The two men did not understand each other to avoid the Danish, the seven-time world champion swerved to the right. He then hit the wall and broke his front wing. Following this incident, the FIA opened an investigation and delivered its verdict very late at night.

Given that neither of the two cars was in a fast lap and that car 20 was being followed by another slow car, we did not consider either of the drivers to be driving dangerously. Since they were not in a fast lap, there was no question of obstructing either one. Under these circumstances, we decided not to take any further action, the commissioners stated.

Lewis Hamilton, who missed his qualification, will start 13th. Kevin Magnussen, 4th.
