In Imola, a statue to never forget Ayrton Senna

The site is calm. There is no hustle and bustle. In the midst of a car racing track, a haven of peace and tranquility. But, the atmosphere is heavy. The first impressions are strange. As if a soul were present. As if a serious event had occurred.

At the entrance of Acque Minerali park, it is possible to come across a few joggers, locals walking their dogs. Very quickly, a concrete wall with fences on top catches the eye. Through this setup, the new turn of the Imola circuit is visible.

The fans bring flags and display them on the circuit fences.

After making a U-turn, a directional sign catches the eye. The visitor is led to follow the asphalt path, lined with grass. On one side, there is a vast space with trees. On the other side, there is that famous concrete wall, which changes colors as you take each step.

Flags are painted on the wall. Others are hung on the fence, accompanied by photos or texts. Suddenly, a small square appears with four green benches facing a statue. Common in a park. But, this one is different.

It’s not about a war hero, a pope, or even a local personality. With a rose in hand, their face towards the ground, a sorrowful expression. Ayrton Senna is laid here, just a few steps away from the place of his death.

On the protective wall, Brazilian flags have been drawn.

Since 1997, the triple Formula 1 world champion has had his place in this world that is filled with both stories and dramas. This place is an unusual destination for some pilgrims. And it has nothing to do with Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Fans of motorsports or sports in general go to this park.

They come to admire the place, the statue, or pay tribute to the former driver of Toleman, McLaren, and Williams. Sometimes from all corners of the world. Some take the opportunity to immortalize the moment. A photo of the statue or a selfie with the bronze building.

“It’s a true legend. It feels strange to be here. We are coming for the first time,” say two Brazilians who came to pay tribute to their idol.

Others take advantage of a few moments to pray. And this palpable soul respects this choice. The activities of businesses and residents on the other side of the Santerno come to a halt during these moments of reflection.

The sign of the cross completed, the buzz resumes. The visit continues for the few curious and enthusiasts. A detour towards the grandstands and the pit lane before returning to the car. Always accompanied in this heavy atmosphere…
