Black Friday for Pierre Gasly in Baku
The French driver was the victim of a fire on his single-seater during the morning testing session and a track excursion in the afternoon.
Pierre Gasly perfectly summarizes his first day of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The day was very disappointing and difficult. After only 15 minutes of driving, the Normandie native is a victim of a hydraulic problem on his car, which catches fire.
His car, almost destroyed, prevents him from getting back on track. His mechanics then embarked on an almost impossible mission. Repair the car as quickly as possible for the qualifying rounds. A task they managed to accomplish.
“I would like to thank the mechanics for the repairs they carried out between the practice sessions and the qualifying in order to make the necessary changes and prepare the car,” highlights Pierre Gasly.
Then, during the qualifications, the French driver went off track at turn 3, which caused the second red flag and also his abandonment of Q1. As a result, he will have to start from the 19th position on Sunday. « It’s one of those days where we had to face setbacks and it’s important that we all bounce back. »
Pierre Gasly will have to make up for it this Saturday with a very important day, including another qualifying session for the afternoon sprint race. We will debrief as a team, move forward together, and hopefully get something out of this race weekend.
This will be an opportunity to regain confidence before a possible comeback worthy of their first race of the season with Alpine.
