Despite Red Bull attracting a lot of attention, Aston Martin was also expected with their new driver Fernando Alonso. As the season approached and the free practice sessions began, the AMR23 showed its potential with Alonso finishing second behind Sergio Perez in FP1, and then leading the way in FP2. Lance Stroll, who is returning from an injury, finished in P6 in both FP1 and FP2, but during the latter session, the Canadian driver seemed to be hindered by his broken wrist, raising doubts about his participation in Sunday’s race.

Dan Fallows, team director, speaking about the work done over the winter, said that the team had set aggressive goals, but that they had achieved them so far.

“We are satisfied with our goal. We have taken a big step forward compared to last year’s car. So we are very happy to have taken a step in this direction. We set ourselves ambitious goals and we believe that we have largely achieved them,” said the former aerodynamics manager at Red Bull.

Fallows thinks that he is well surrounded at Aston Martin.

The British driver recalls that he spent several years at Red Bull with whom he notably won all the driver and constructor titles between 2010 and 2013. « I was fortunate to have a relatively recent experience with a top-level team and its functioning. »

At Aston Martin since 2021, he believes that the team has stepped up and needs to rely on these strengths to compete against the top teams on the grid: « It can sometimes be very challenging for midfield teams to be competitive at all levels with the best teams, especially in areas such as facilities and tools. Therefore, it is extremely important to focus on your strengths. In the case of Aston Martin, I believe that some people have been there for quite a long time, but the team has evolved. This is a great strength for us. We have an incredibly talented and passionate team around us. Therefore, we must rely on that. »

With the performance of these drivers in the first free practice sessions of the season, Aston Martin more than ever has the role of an outsider for the upcoming season.
