Williams had a two-year plan for Logan Sargeant in Formula 2
If Logan Sargeant had to spend two years in Formula 2, his performances quickly proved that he was ready to move up to Formula 1.
Logan Sargeant, a junior driver at Williams, will make his Formula 1 debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix after securing a seat for 2023. Alongside Alex Albon, he becomes the first American on the grid full-time since Scott Speed in 2007.
Sargeant was recruited to replace Nicholas Latifi – who left Williams after three years – after an impressive rookie year in F2 that saw him secure two victories and finish fourth in the championship.
The Sporting Director of Williams, Sven Smeets, revealed that the team had planned for Sargeant to spend two years in F2, but his performances suggested that he did not need another year in the category.
“We had a two-year plan with Logan in F2,” Smeets stated to Autosport.
« I think that’s how everyone starts,” he continues. “When the season began, very quickly and especially at Silverstone and the races that followed, we started to see the potential that maybe we didn’t need to do two seasons with him in F2.” »
Smeets didn’t just praise the driver’s merits during the Grand Prix, but also during the simulations and physical training sessions.
