According to the BBC, the Chinese Grand Prix will be cancelled
China's zero Covid policy would prevent the Grand Prix from being held in 2023. The event would not be replaced.
The last visit of F1 to China dates back to 2019. This year, the sport celebrated its 1000th Grand Prix there. Since then, no car has set its wheels on the Shanghai track.
The health crisis has disrupted the calendar in 2020, then in 2021, and finally, in 2022. The “Zero Covid” policy implemented by the Chinese government has prevented the event from taking place in these three years.
This policy could once again lead to the cancellation of the 2023 edition. According to the BBC, the Chinese Grand Prix scheduled for April 16, 2023, is not expected to take place. According to our colleagues, the F1 believes that it cannot ask teams to travel to the country for the race in Shanghai with the risk of personnel being detained for days if they contract a coronavirus.
They add that the Grand Prix will not be replaced, reducing the calendar to 23 races, which would still be a record for the championship.
The F1 did not comment on these rumors and refused to answer the BBC’s questions on this subject.
