Under investigation after FP3, Lewis Hamilton escapes penalty
Under investigation for overtaking a car under red flag conditions, Lewis Hamilton finally escaped punishment.
The penalty could have been heavy, but in the end, there won’t be one. During the third free practice session, Lewis Hamilton overtook Kevin Magnussen, who was driving slowly, just as the red flag was waved.
Following this action, the commissioners decided to launch an investigation. After several hours of debate, the British individual was finally exonerated and did not receive any penalties.
For their judgment, the commissioners used a similar action during the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. Max Verstappen was under investigation for the same reasons. In Abu Dhabi, Lewis Hamilton reached a speed of 288 km/h compared to 126 km/h for Magnussen.
The officials specify that the Mercedes driver immediately took his foot off the accelerator and promptly pressed the brake. The difference in speed explains the overtaking.
