Red Bull still aiming for the championship double
The Austrian team has already won the drivers' and constructors' titles this season, but it is aiming to complete the double with Sergio Pérez. A feat that Red Bull has never achieved so far, despite a long period of domination from 2010 to 2013. After the discord in Brazil, Christian Horner reminds us that the aim of this Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is to take Sergio Pérez to the honorary title of vice-world champion.
The relationship between the two Red Bull drivers has become complicated after the Brazilian Grand Prix. However, after a meeting where the two men exchanged, it was agreed that the team and Max Verstappen will assist Sergio Pérez in Abu Dhabi so that he becomes the vice-champion of the world.
“The two drivers have been open and honest with each other and as a team, we will now move forward. The team dynamics are excellent and will remain so,” declares Christian Horner to GPblog.com.
A close fight for second place
Max Verstappen’s refusal to cooperate during the last Grand Prix allowed Charles Leclerc to catch up with Sergio Pérez in the championship. Therefore, the Mexican driver absolutely needs to finish ahead of his Monégasque rival because Leclerc has achieved more victories this season and would be ranked second in the championship in case of a tie. However, there is only one scenario where both men would finish on equal terms. They would need to finish 9th and 10th in the Grand Prix, with the 10th place driver holding the fastest lap of the race.
A historic double.
Red Bull intends to permanently enter the legend of Formula 1. The team is completely focused on achieving this double, which would be the first for the Austrian team.
The objective is clear. We have never achieved a double with the drivers and we want to accomplish it now. We made mistakes in Brazil, but we have learned from them. Max’s season is on a different level, so we will not let the events of a race weekend affect the season finale.
