Daniel Ricciardo in talks with several teams for 2024
The Australian will no longer be a regular driver in 2023. Not retained by McLaren, Daniel Ricciardo finds himself out of a job. He is already negotiating a possible return in two years' time.
Two races. He only has a few moments left in his Formula 1 career. Daniel Ricciardo is on his way out. McLaren has decided not to keep him in 2023, in favor of Oscar Piastri.
The multiple Grand Prix winner desperately sought to stay in the discipline, but no doors opened for him. « I can confirm that I will not be on the grid behind a steering wheel next year », he confirmed.
The Australian has indeed tried to negotiate with some teams, in vain. But Toto Wolff, the boss of Mercedes, hinted that he could become the reserve driver of his team. « I think Daniel is talking to some teams about a potential role, including Red Bull. On our side, we like him a lot because he is a great character, but we still don’t know who will be our third driver, he told Sky Sports.
Within the German team, Daniel Ricciardo could bring his experience and his zest for life, assures Toto Wolff. He knows these cars like the back of his hand, which could be really advantageous. But I don’t want to spread rumors because we haven’t made our decision yet.
On his side, the Honey Badger asserts that he still loves F1 and wants to come back as soon as possible. “I still want to be in the sport and work with a team that has the ambition to be back on the grid in 2024. I feel like taking some time away from the cockpit will do me good. Then, I will try to rebuild something for 2024. I’m not finished [with F1], but it will be a bit different.”
