The Japanese Grand Prix interrupted by a red flag

Chaotic start in chaotic conditions. The first meters were clean for most of the drivers, except for Sebastian Vettel, who spun out at the first turn. The German, who started ninth, managed to get back on track in last position.

A few turns later, it was Carlos Sainz who got caught due to aquaplaning just after the hairpin. The Spaniard hit the wall and brought advertising signs onto the track. Pierre Gasly hit one of them, breaking his wing. At the same time, a mechanical issue affected Alex Albon’s Williams.

All these incidents required the intervention of the safety car before the red flag was displayed.
