However, he had a great chance of succeeding. The Monegasque started from pole position and escaped at the front of the race, taking advantage of his rival’s penalty to widen the gap. But, during the virtual safety car intervention, he put on medium tires. Unfortunately, it was too early and he had to make a second pit stop.

At the end of the race, Daniel Ricciardo’s withdrawal triggered the intervention of a safety car and the Grand Prix was unable to resume. This did not sit well with the Ferrari driver, who would have liked to have the opportunity to defend his chances for a few more laps.

« It was frustrating, we shouldn’t end a race like that. It’s what happened before that put us in second place. I was hoping to be able to win in front of the fans. […] I’m not super happy with the race. I think our pace was quite good, but not good enough. »

The title is slipping away a little further for the Monégasque, with a now 116-point deficit in the standings.
