These drivers with at least 10 wins in one season
Max Verstappen reached the milestone of 10 wins in a single season at Zandvoort. But before him, how many drivers have achieved this feat?
12 references, but only four drivers. Since the beginning of Formula 1 in 1950, drivers have been fighting to accumulate victories, titles, and records. Over time, the number of races has gradually increased, allowing some to push the limits even further.
Thus, with an increasingly busy schedule, it is – in theory – easier for a competitor to increase their number of victories and achieve record-breaking seasons. Since the early 2000s, the symbolic milestone of 10 victories in a season has characterized these statements.
13 successes of Schumacher and Vettel
In the 20th century, seasons with more than 7-8 victories were rare for several reasons: limited number of races, strong competition, or relative reliability. Only Ayrton Senna (8), Nigel Mansell (9), Alain Prost (7), and Jim Clark (7) were able to achieve such a feat.
But recently, it has become common for a driver to exceed 10 victories in a single season. The first to achieve this feat was none other than Michael Schumacher in 2002 with 11 first-place finishes. He repeated this performance two years later, completely dominating the competition with 13 wins. A record. He is actually at the top of the list as he accomplished this feat in just 18 races, compared to 19 for Vettel (who also had 13 victories) in 2013.
Max Verstappen to break the record?
Behind the two Germans, we obviously find Lewis Hamilton, who, between 2014 and 2021, managed to outperform the field on six occasions. Only 2017 and 2021 are missing.
Recently, it’s Max Verstappen who entered this ranking with 10 victories last year. The Dutchman has actually repeated it this year with this milestone reached, at home, in front of his fans, with still seven races to go. With a winning percentage of 66.6% (10/15), the Red Bull driver has a good chance of equaling or breaking the record co-held by Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher. If we follow this statistic, he should win at least four of the upcoming races, theoretically raising the tally to 14.
