Verstappen: A record co-held by Vettel and Schumacher to beat?
After another masterfully managed weekend, Max Verstappen appears to be inexorably heading towards his second consecutive world champion title. The Red Bull seems to be on track and the Dutchman is impeccable in his driving.
New Grand Prix, new display for Red Bull who continues to leave their mark on the 2022 championship. Max Verstappen has already secured his ninth victory of the season and nothing and no one seems to be able to stop him at the end of this championship.
The floor upgrade doesn’t seem to have hindered Red Bull, quite the opposite. It seems to have created an even larger gap with the rest of the field. With the possible arrival of an even lighter underfloor, the Dutch driver’s car will be difficult to catch.
A record in sight?
He could even go for a prestigious record, that of the most wins in a season. The current record is jointly held by two Germans, Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher, with 13 victories.
Sebastian Vettel achieved this feat during the 2013 season. The season was marked by Red Bull’s overwhelming dominance. The German even managed to win nine consecutive Grand Prixes, which is also a record.
Michael Schumacher set this record in 2004 by winning 13 out of the 18 races of the season, whereas his compatriot had one more race on the calendar to equal it. The seven-time world champion triumphed in 12 out of the first 13 Grand Prix of the season. The Ferrari driver retired at Monaco, putting an end to his streak of five consecutive victories.
Out of the remaining nine Grand Prix races, Max Verstappen only needs 4 wins to equal this record. Given the superiority displayed by the Austrian team, it is even quite likely to see him secure this record by the end of the season, barring mechanical issues or a comeback from his competitors.
