Can Mercedes secure second place in the constructor’s championship?
The German team is racking up podiums and the problems encountered at the beginning of the season seem far behind.
A lot of hopes at the beginning of the season, but the results were not there. However, even though Lewis Hamilton secured his first podium of the season at the first Grand Prix, Mercedes was struggling. The cause? The porpoising, which was greatly affecting the W13.
In the following races, the seven-time world champion was in a worse position and was struggling for a few points against the Haas, while his teammate, accustomed to difficult cars to drive, was trying to secure a spot in the top 5.
The metamorphosis of the W13
Unless there is a mistake from Red Bull and Ferrari who were leading, it’s hard to see how the German team could regain their status as leaders and impose themselves. However, facing the issue of “porpoising,” the FIA has decided to take action and the Mercedes has undergone a transformation.
The driver number 44 is finding his pace again and is starting to compete on equal terms with his regular teammate, consistently in the top 5, and taking advantage of any opportunity to step onto the podium. Both British drivers benefit from their rivals’ mechanical issues as well as Ferrari’s strategies to snatch a few points.
All of this, combined with the growing performance of the W13, Mercedes is starting to become a serious threat for the podium, even the victory. In France, the pace displayed by their two cars and the craftiness of George Russell allowed them to achieve the first double podium of the season. And in Hungary? George Russell obtained his first pole position and Lewis Hamilton, the fastest man on track, closed in on Max Verstappen, the race winner, with a series of impressive tenths.
Second most productive team from Canada.
“On the scorecard, Mercedes is the second team with the most points. With 143 units, it surpasses Ferrari with 135 points and closely follows Red Bull with 152 points. Carlos Sainz drops in the rankings and loses his fourth place in the drivers’ standings. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, remains in sixth place but is dangerously catching up to the Spaniard.”
In view of the progress made by the German team and the drivers’ understanding of their car, Mercedes is becoming increasingly threatening to Ferrari, who seems to have lost control of the situation. By making strategic mistakes and encountering mechanical problems, the Italian team risks facing difficulties at the end of the season if the situation is not rectified. Additionally, George Russell, who is seeking his first victory and getting closer race after race, will be determined to achieve it. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton, who has found his form again, seems to have regained the rhythm of a world champion that we know him for.
The second half of the season could therefore be in favor of Mercedes if they continue their progress and if reliability remains on their side. Especially since only 30 points separate them from Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s team.
