The safety cage will be reinforced next season
The FIA is ready to strengthen the roll hoop of single-seater cars following Guanyu Zhou's accident at Silverstone.
Lessons are drawn from every accident. While some are more serious and more dramatic than others, the FIA and the teams use them to constantly improve safety in the sport. If the latest major addition introduced is the halo, it has allowed for the saving of numerous lives in multiple categories.
There, following the terrible accident of Guanyu Zhou at Silverstone, it is the safety roll cage that is being called into question. It broke as soon as the single-seater ended up on its roof. The Alfa Romeo is equipped with a blade-type roll cage that is authorized by the FIA and has successfully passed safety tests. However, the impact received was twice as severe as those in the crash test.
During a meeting, the Technical Advisory Committee looked into this issue and states that « the teams have confirmed their willingness to implement stricter measures for the safety roll cage in 2023, and the FIA has committed to completing the relevant analysis and communicating new safety requirements for the roll cage to the teams.
Following the accident of the Chinese pilot, who miraculously escaped unharmed, the safety measures are once again moving in the right direction and providing additional protection for pilots, officials, and spectators.
