Smoke bombs, not pilots’ best friends

The Red Bull Ring was packed with people. Every year, a very large delegation from Max Verstappen’s fan club travels to Austria to support the reigning world champion. On this occasion, the thousands of Dutch supporters show their excitement with smoke bombs before the start.

If it makes for beautiful images, on the track the visibility is very reduced. And many drivers have mixed opinions about their use. « It was a lot during the formation lap, but nothing terrible. We could still see, so it was alright », Charles Leclerc says.

The seven-time reigning world champion, Lewis Hamilton, is being more critical of the use of these objects. « I would say the same. During the formation lap, we couldn’t see the apex of turn 7. And at the end of the race, we couldn’t see anything in turn 6. Luckily, it wasn’t necessarily the case during the race. But maybe they should keep them for the end. I can’t believe they are good for the environment, by the way. »

The main person concerned by these scenes of joy, Max Verstappen, is touched by the enthusiasm of his fans but wants to warn about potential excesses. I saw a smoke bomb, they threw it on the track or on the grass. I think that’s the only thing they shouldn’t do. As long as they keep them in the stands, I think it’s okay.

This is not the first time that these objects have been under criticism. At Spa or even at Zandvoort, many drivers had complained. But they are not the only ones responsible. Fireworks fired when the winner crosses the line during certain races can reduce the visibility of the drivers coming behind.
