George Russell, coming to the rescue of Guanyu Zhou
The Mercedes driver stopped at the edge of the track to go help Guanyu Zhou after the first corner accident.
“It’s one of the most horrifying crashes I’ve ever seen,” says George Russell. During the start of the British Grand Prix, a violent accident involving five cars took place. Guanyu Zhou flipped over and quickly crossed the runoff area at the first corner, narrowly avoiding ending up in the crowd.
George Russell, who was involved in this incident, stopped on the side of the track to go and assist the Chinese driver. At least, that’s what he confirmed during the red flag, while his Mercedes was heavily damaged.
He then left his single-seater and ran towards the Alfa Romeo, which was stuck between the safety fence and the barriers. After a very long few minutes, the rookie was taken out of his car before being escorted to the circuit’s medical center.
“It was a frightening incident and all credit goes to the marshals and medical team for their swift response,” tweeted George Russell after his retirement.
