Gasly had nothing to lose in Monaco
Eleventh at the points' door in Monaco, Pierre Gasly was satisfied with his race as he started from the back of the grid.
No points for Pierre Gasly in Monaco, but what a race from the Norman driver. The AlphaTauri driver was the main showman at the start of the race, making his way up from the back of the grid. Only 17th at the start after a traffic issue prevented him from getting out of Q1 yesterday, Gasly was determined on the twisty Monaco circuit.
The Normand stops at the end of the first lap to switch to intermediate tires, which contrasts with the wet tires used by the rest of the grid. This choice allows him to move up as many drivers imitate him in the following laps, but come out of the pits behind him.
During the 12th lap, Gasly, who was in 14th place, made a superb overtaking move on Guanyu Zhou, who had been blocking him for a few laps, in the descent of Mirabeau. Then, two laps later, the Frenchman overtook Daniel Ricciardo thanks to better grip coming out of turn 12. Two amazing overtakes that Gasly couldn’t replicate during the stint on hard tires, remaining stuck in 12th position behind Vettel until the finish.
Reclassified eleventh with Ocon’s penalty, Pierre Gasly was satisfied with his race, even though there are no points at the finish.
“We had nothing to lose. I decided to go through the pits on the first lap because there was no point in sticking to the same strategy as everyone else. At the beginning, it was very difficult in these conditions, but we took risks and it paid off,” Gasly explained to Canal+.”
(I) I managed to overtake, it was quite intense, not easy, but it made the race a bit more fun from where we started. I’m a little sad that we didn’t score any points despite having a good race,” says the French.
« I was glad that the rain came. When you start 17th on a dry track in Monaco, there isn’t much to hope for, so it was quite good. We did really well in the practice sessions, I’m just disappointed about yesterday (Saturday), we made mistakes that we’ll have to correct because this weekend we had the performance to achieve better things. » regrets Gasly.
In the rankings, Pierre Gasly is only fourteenth with just six points.
