Sainz and Perez are changing gearboxes
The two drivers must change their gearbox following their accident in qualifying.
Despite this change, these two men will not receive a penalty on the starting grid. In the last moments of qualifying, Sergio Perez went off track a few meters before the entrance to the tunnel. A handful of seconds later, Carlos Sainz, caught off guard, collided with the Mexican.
The impact certainly must have damaged the gearboxes of both drivers as they will start with brand new parts for this Monaco Grand Prix.
After examining Carlos’ car following yesterday’s accident and considering the force of the impact, we have decided to change the gearbox as a precaution. Naturally, the damaged rear parts have also been replaced. These changes are penalty-free, Ferrari stated in a brief announcement.
Contrary to previous seasons, drivers no longer have to complete a certain number of races before changing their gearbox without risking a penalty. Now, they have four sets available for the entire year and can change whenever they want.
Carlos Sainz will indeed start from second place and Sergio Perez from third.
