Aston Martin would be targeting Alonso to replace Vettel in 2023
In anticipation of a possible departure of Sebastian Vettel at the end of the season, Aston Martin would be considering Fernando Alonso as his replacement. This transfer could open up a spot for Oscar Piastri at Alpine.
The usual “silly season” of transfers could bring some surprises.
Sebastian Vettel continues to keep the future uncertain as his contract comes to an end this season. While Aston Martin’s director, Mike Krack, has clearly expressed his desire to keep the four-time world champion, the team owner, Lawrence Stroll, disappointed with the German’s performances, would like to replace him.
The Canadian billionaire would have checked the name of another world champion, Fernando Alonso. The 40-year-old Spaniard doesn’t seem ready to retire yet and has admitted wanting to race for a few more years. But the Bull from Asturias might want a change of scenery as Alpine has not yet been able to provide him with a machine capable of winning races in a straightforward manner.
With a contract also expiring at the end of the season, the Spaniard has not closed the door to a departure as he hopes to continue in Formula 1 for another two or three years. In the event of Alonso’s transfer, Alpine could give its seat to the reigning F2 champion, Oscar Piastri. The young Australian, whose name has also been mentioned in connection with Williams, is currently serving as a reserve driver for the French team.
