Sainz grateful after Daniel Ricciardo’s apologies
During the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo's McLaren sent Carlos Sainz's Ferrari into the gravel trap, which is why the Australian apologized to the Ferrari driver.
The start of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was particularly eventful. A collision between Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz caused the safety car to come out on the first lap. In the Tamburello chicane, the McLaren, which was on the inside of the corner, hit the side pods of Sainz’s Ferrari, sending the Spaniard into the gravel trap.
Even though he only finished 18th in this Grand Prix, the Australian was able to continue the race, unlike Carlos Sainz who had to abandon. So, right after finishing his race, Daniel Ricciardo made a stop at Ferrari. Under the watchful eyes of the Scuderia mechanics, the “honey badger” apologized to Carlos Sainz, a gesture greatly appreciated by the Spaniard.
“It says a lot about the athlete and sportsman that Daniel is,” said Sainz. “Immediately after a race that was tough for him, the first thing he did was come to the Ferrari garage to apologize to me. All the mechanics were there with me, and we all thanked him for this gesture. That’s why there are no hard feelings towards Daniel after what happened. It could have happened to anyone, but unfortunately, it happened to me when I had already had an accident in Melbourne.”
After this race with heavy consequences for the Scuderia, Carlos Sainz is in fifth place in the driver’s standings, trailing his Monégasque teammate by 48 points.
