Ferrari does not regret Charles Leclerc’s attempt
Charles Leclerc went all out towards the end of the race. Although the result was not what the driver and the Scuderia had hoped for, the team claims to have no regrets about this attempt.
During the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc drove behind Sergio Perez for the majority of the race. While his position secured him a podium, the driver attempted to accelerate towards the end of the race.
On the 50th lap, the Scuderia called Leclerc into the pit for a tire change. Thanks to the soft tires, the Monegasque was able to accelerate the pace and thus reduce the gap between him and Sergio Perez. However, the pressure he put on the Mexican’s shoulders turned against him on the 53rd lap. Leclerc attacked too hard in the Variante Atla chicane and lost control of his F1-75, crashing into the opposite wall.
If the damage had been less severe, a pit stop was necessary due to the impact on the front wing of the car. Charles Leclerc then re-emerged in ninth place and managed to climb back up to take sixth place at the checkered flag. Despite the points lost by Ferrari, team principal Mattia Binotto has no regrets.
“I don’t think we will ever regret asking a driver to attack,” said Mattia Binotto. “I think it is part of our job and it is part of theirs to try to push to the limit. Mistakes happen. I think this year, obviously, the new cars are stiffer on the curbs. If you make the slightest mistake, you pay a high price for it. So, no regrets. I think we made the right choice and that’s it,” he concluded.
