Audi and Porsche in F1: Alpine remains on guard
Alpine's President, Laurent Rossi, is delighted by the entry of Porsche and Audi into Formula 1, but is wary of the shadow they might cast over the other manufacturers already present.
The Volkswagen Group has confirmed the arrival of Porsche and Audi in Formula 1 as soon as the new engine regulations are implemented in 2026, while still waiting to know these measures.
Porsche and Audi would develop their engines independently and could potentially become a power unit supplier for Red Bull, whose engine supplier left Formula 1 at the end of last season. As new entrants, both manufacturers would benefit from a separate budget cap.
If the president of Alpine, Laurent Rossi, finds this announcement positive, he still expresses some concerns regarding the competition posed by the two brands.
« I think it’s good, it’s a good thing for the sport,” Rossi stated. « But we really have to pay attention to a few small things. We need to make sure that two distinct teams remain distinct. We need to make sure that if they enter the arena as teams, are they working teams, do they come from Porsche, Audi, Red Bull, or Honda? Do they have specific treatment or not? So, in concrete terms, will it be good for the sport or not? » he wondered.
However, Laurent Rossi is not the only one expressing such concerns. Indeed, his questions are shared by the top teams of Ferrari and Mercedes, Mattia Binotto and Toto Wolff.
