Colton Herta regrets not being in Formula 1 this season
IndyCar driver Colton Herta could have been one of the two Alfa Romeo drivers this season. However, the team's choice did not fall on the American.
At the beginning of the season, Alfa Romeo is delivering rather satisfying performances. While former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas regularly brings points to the Swiss team, his new teammate, rookie Guanyu Zhou, secured his first point in Formula 1 in the opening race in Bahrain. Currently sixth in the constructors’ standings, Alfa Romeo could have been Colton Herta’s team in 2022.
If he drives for Andretti on the American IndyCar circuits, Herta is ambivalent about Alfa Romeo. On one hand, the 22-year-old driver doesn’t get bored in IndyCar. On the other hand, he regrets not being able to access Formula 1, especially with Alfa Romeo’s good results.
“It burns a bit now to see how good they are this year, but it wasn’t the right time,” laments Herta. “And honestly, it’s a good thing it didn’t happen and they didn’t try harder. Michael and Dan did what they had to do in this situation, but you can’t force it. It wasn’t a good arrangement, so kudos to them for distancing themselves from it,” she adds.
Colton Herta is thus continuing his path with Andretti Autosport, a team that could very well join Formula 1 in a few years. This is definitely Mario Andretti’s wish.
