For safety reasons, the FIA has prohibited wearing any kind of necklace or piercing in the single-seater cars, a rule that Lewis Hamilton will not comply with.

For the Australian Grand Prix, the FIA has decided to bring back a safety rule up to date. Once a driver takes control of their race car, they are no longer allowed to wear a certain type of jewelry, specifically a necklace or any piercings.

This rule has not been in effect in recent years. By bringing back this security measure, the new race director Niels Wittich clearly shows his determination to maximize driver safety on the track. But for some, the FIA is going too far.

“I don’t plan on removing them,” said seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who himself has multiple piercings in his ears. “I think they’re personal things, you should be able to be yourself. There are some that I can’t even take out. The ones on my right ear are literally welded. They should be cut or something, so they will stay.”

But the FIA goes even further in its measures, as the Sports Code requires drivers to wear fire-resistant underwear, which the Frenchman Pierre Gasly mocked by joking about a thorough inspection of his outfit. “If they want to check my ass, they shouldn’t hesitate, I have nothing to hide. My dick, everything. If it pleases them, they shouldn’t hesitate,” he declared.
