Kevin Magnussen: a few too many changes in Melbourne
Formula 1 returns to Melbourne for the first time since 2019. Due to Covid, the last two editions of the Grand Prix were canceled.
Just like many of the corners, the chicane after turn 8 has been replaced to allow for acceleration at that point. But for the Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, such acceleration was not necessary.
« I think I had the same feeling when I saw the new design of the track, that maybe it was a bit too much,” said Magnussen. « Removing what the turn 9/10 was, I don’t think they needed to do that. But they made a big effort to make the show more impressive. And I think it’s a good thing for tracks to try to make them better to develop the race. It’s a very good thing. We will see how it goes during the race. ».
« I think that the turn before the ninth one is going to be very fast, with the DRS open.
» continued the Dane.
« I think that the cars are going to be wider here. But we will see. I think that opinions differ on what constitutes a good race. An overtaking move that is too easy can also be bad, it just puts more or less everyone at the same pace.
« We have to find a kind of balance. Some circuits have the right balance to still have some racing, a bit of action, but also have opportunities for defense. If you can’t defend yourself, if you get overtaken by being a little slower, it’s also not a good thing. Everything is a matter of balance, I think. So we’ll see how it is on the track during the race. », concluded the driver.
