The 4 “tactically interesting” DRS zones for Valtteri Bottas

The pandemic of the past two years have deprived the Australian Grand Prix drivers. While this race is usually the opening round of the season, this time it is the third event for the teams.

On this occasion, the Albert Park track has undergone a whole host of modifications. While many corners have been widened, the FIA has opted for four DRS zones, a first in Formula 1. They will be located on the start straight, between turns 2 and 3, and between turns 8 and 9. The last one will be between turns 10 and 11.

In Saudi Arabia, the DRS zones sparked a duel between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc for victory, with each overtaking the other on every use of the DRS. For Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas, these zones hold a tactical advantage.

“I think it will make the race tactically interesting,” explained Bottas. “When you’re fighting with other drivers, you have to be sure that you will have the upper hand when it comes to overtaking, especially if it’s a battle towards the end of the race where you have to calculate the right timing. It just makes things different and there will be overtaking opportunities. So I’m okay with the four DRS zones, it suits me.”
