A lot of pressure at Ferrari despite a good start
After several seasons away from the spotlight, the Scuderia Ferrari is finally back at the top of the rankings.
The last World Drivers’ Championship title won by Ferrari dates back to 2007 with Michael Schumacher. But the true period of dominance for the prancing horse brand dates back to the early 2000s. After 2007, no titles have been won by the Italian team, and the position of the team principal has kept changing. And yet, Mattia Binotto’s position at Ferrari seems more stable.
Appointed in January 2019, the former head of the technical department managed to gain Ferrari’s trust, even after the fiasco of 2020. This trust seems to be bearing its first fruits this season. “Of course, there was a lot of pressure. In addition to the pressure I had put on myself,” Binotto confided.
“This winter (during which we worked hard) was not fair. This kind of project takes years. It has been a very long journey and we are not finished yet. There is a lot to do and develop. We want to bring the Ferrari spirit back to this team, that’s what defines us,” explained the Italian.
According to some experts, Ferrari owes this comeback to a major investment in 2021. While Mercedes and Red Bull’s focus was on the championship, Ferrari was already looking towards 2022. However, Mattia Binotto assures that this advantage is not as considerable as people think and expects to have a real idea after the first five races of the season.
