Running in Saudi Arabia is important for Stefano Domenicali
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix has joined the official Formula 1 calendar in 2021, but the events of the second edition have raised doubts about the future of this Grand Prix. For Stefano Domenicali, it is important to continue racing in this country.
On Sunday, March 27th, the Formula 1 drivers lined up on the starting grid for the Jeddah Grand Prix. However, events almost prevented them from doing so.
Two days before the Grand Prix, an explosion resounded in the circuit area. Aramco’s oil site, located just a few kilometers from the track, was attacked by drones. Sources revealed shortly after that it was a strike by Houthi rebels, with seven other armed drones intercepted by local authorities.
On the same evening, pilots, team executives, and members of the FIA gathered to discuss whether or not to continue the race. Although the drivers did start the race, the question arises about the future of the GP in this country. On one hand, the Saudi Minister of Sports declared to be open to discussions, whether it concerns the track or circuit safety. On the other hand, the President of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, believes it is important to continue racing in Saudi Arabia.
« It is part of our job to discuss with all stakeholders. The report is extremely important to us, as well as open dialogue. » explained Domenicali. « If you were there last weekend, then you can understand what I mean. The younger generation, the women present, the children. Don’t forget that a few years ago, they didn’t have the right to go out. » revealed the president of Formula 1.
Sport plays a significant role in the evolution of mentalities, which is one of the reasons why Domenicali is keen to keep Saudi Arabia on the calendar.
