Domenicali: “Running in the afternoon is not an option” in the United States
Thursday, Formula 1 announced the addition of a new race in the United States in 2023. While the Austin Grand Prix has been on the calendar since 2012, Miami's race is making its debut this season. A brand new GP will arrive in 2023: Las Vegas.
This Thursday, a new Grand Prix was added to the drivers’ calendar for 2023. The United States will not host two, but three Grand Prix in one season. The one in Austin is already well known to the drivers. However, they have no experience on the one in Miami, which appeared this season. The third GP will be held in Las Vegas, an iconic city.
Stefano Domenicali, President of Formula 1, announced that the races would take place on Saturdays instead of Sundays and explained his decision to Sky Sports.
“I think it’s the perfect time for this event, especially in this context,” he said. “Formula 1 cannot be static. Having a race on Sunday at 3 pm would be a complete mistake. That’s why we are flexible, to show that this is the best time to have the best show in this context,” Domenicali concluded, knowing that Americans tend to watch sports more on Saturdays rather than Sundays.
