Red Bull could lose Pierre Gasly if a promotion is not considered

Pierre Gasly entered Formula 1 with Toro Rosso at the end of 2017. Although he was promoted to Red Bull in 2019, he was only able to compete in 12 races with the big sister team. The Frenchman returned to Toro Rosso, now renamed AlphaTauri. Since then, Gasly has set out to be as competitive as possible in order to rejoin the Austrian team. While his return was not part of Christian Horner’s immediate plans, others believe that he deserves a second chance.

Gerhard Berger notably admitted that he was good enough to have another chance. As for Helmut Marko, special advisor to Red Bull, he was recently interviewed about the abilities and performances of the Frenchman.

« Gerhard is right, but for the moment we have a contract with Checo [Pérez],” explained Marko. « We have to compare the performances of both drivers, and with Checo we have until the middle of the year. With Gasly, we have a contract until 2023, and it’s clear that if we can’t offer him a chance to move up, we will lose him, and we don’t want that,” the Austrian confessed.

From Pierre Gasly’s side, he is primarily focused on his season but keeps the subject in the back of his mind.

« Now, I am focused on giving my best, but obviously I want to be in a fast car that allows me to fight for the win, that’s the only thing that matters,” said Pierre Gasly. « I want to win in Formula 1 and I need a car that allows me to do so. We will discuss it with Helmut when the time is right,” he concluded.
