Jenson Button is surprised by Norris’ long extension
In 2022, Lando Norris signs his fourth season with McLaren, the team of his beginnings. The British driver announced in February the extension of his contract, a surprising decision for Jenson Button.
This season, the British driver Lando Norris is driving for McLaren for the fourth consecutive year. He entered Formula 1 in 2019 and has not been part of any other team up until now. Last February, Norris announced that he had signed with McLaren until 2025. After spending eight seasons with McLaren himself, Jenson Button finds this decision relatively surprising.
« I think Norris made a surprising choice. » explained the 2009 world champion. « We all want to be part of a team, but you never know where you’ll be in three years. ».
The former Formula 1 driver was also questioned about the difficulties McLaren is facing. Indeed, the MCL36 is suffering from a serious brake cooling issue coupled with a lack of aerodynamic downforce. The team is currently eighth in the constructors’ championship, with only six points on the scoreboard.
Despite these shaky results, Jenson Button has confidence in his former team. “It’s an excellent team,” Button said. “They have won numerous championships and have many qualified individuals. They will develop the car in the best possible way.”
