A new contract for Sainz at Ferrari?
While Charles Leclerc's contract is set to expire in 2023, Carlos Sainz's contract only covers the 2022 season. It seems that an agreement between the Spaniard and Ferrari has been reached after the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The day after the double victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Ferrari seems to have regained excellent form which had been sorely missing for the past two years.
If, on one hand, Charles Leclerc returned to victory and can be reassured by a two-season contract, on the other hand, his teammate Carlos Sainz allowed Scuderia to take second place on the podium and take the lead in the constructor standings.
However, the contract of the Spaniard only includes the 2022 season with the Italian team. This is why negotiations are in full swing between Mattia Binotto, team principal of Ferrari, and the driver Carlos Sainz. Apparently, an agreement has been reached between the two, it only remains to put it in writing.
(I) “I think we are close. Very close, very, very close. Extremely close. We are almost there,” stated Carlos Sainz. On the other hand, Mattia Binotto agrees with the driver. (I) “I believe we have reached an agreement. Now it is only a matter of transcribing it onto paper,” he declared.
A complicated weekend for Sainz.
Carlos Sainz also explained that he was not satisfied with his race weekend. In the free practice sessions, I was very far behind, more than I have ever been at Ferrari. That’s why, even with a 1-2 finish in the race, I am not fully satisfied with this weekend, he explained. As a Ferrari driver, this weekend has been the most challenging and it proves that I just need to take a step back, understand this car, and see where Charles makes the difference with his driving, his approach to corners, and his tyre management.
« I need to improve if I want to fight for a victory, so I will reflect and move forward step by step before Jeddah. Can I really improve from one weekend to another? Yes, I believe so.
